During Pride month—a time meant for celebration and reflection—the reality of increasing hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community casts a shadow over the festivities. Over the past eight years, the atmosphere has darkened considerably in the UK, which has seen its ranking plummet from 1st in 2015 to 17th in 2023 on ILGA’s Rainbow Europe Index of ‘safe’ countries for LGBTQ+ people. Last year alone, 28,000 anti-LGBTQ+ hate crimes were recorded. Amidst this challenging climate, soundnest partnered with Galop for the “It’s Not All Sunshine And Rainbows” campaign, an initiative highlighting these crucial issues and aiming to restore a sense of safety and celebration to the community.

Our task was complex and vital: to integrate powerful storm effects with clear, impactful narratives within a compelling auditory experience. The campaign presented unique challenges, especially in synchronizing thunder claps and severe weather sounds with heartfelt dialogues about personal struggles and resilience.

Utilizing our Dolby Atmos technology, we created an intricate soundscape that foregrounded essential dialogue while enveloping the listener in a dynamic environment. This setup not only underscored the spoken words but also amplified the immersive visual experience, allowing attendees to feel surrounded by the voices and stories being shared.

Our efforts in sound design and mixing were aimed at ensuring that every word was clearly heard, thereby amplifying the voices of those affected by hate crimes. The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with many noting how the sound added a profound layer of emotion and connection to the campaign.
